This is my 6th year of using a Classroom Website and I find it extremely helpful. I started using a website to post the homework online as many of my Grade 4 students at the time would go home and tell their parents “I don’t have any homework” or “I forgot my agenda at school”. It was helpful for both the parents and my students to stay up to date.
As the years went by, I continued to tweak and add more and more to the site. It became more of an overall classroom website vs just a homework website.
My current Classroom Website is divided into 6 sections:
- Home (updates and important dates)
- Our Classroom (classroom rules, details on Whole Brain Teaching, info on Flexible Seating and our class schedule)
- Homework (homework sheet, math worksheets, tools for math, reading, writing, and studying vocabulary words)
- Tools for Parents (homework help, info on how to blog, iPad apps, and links)
- Connect With Us (links to our classroom blog and twitter)
- Contact Info (my school email and school phone number)
I explain the site to my parents at the beginning of the school year and let the parents know that I will continue to update it on a regular basis. I find this really gives my parents a clear idea of what to expect in my classroom and it also helps them stay connected in the digital world, which I find so important.
I use Weebly as my website builder. I find it user friendly and the end result is always high-quality. It’s easy to update, easy to make changes… I just love it! (I even use it for my own personal site and my blog.)
